MEDIEVAL ART -  award of arms

Illuminated initials (enlarged and decorated capital letters) were commonly used and developed in various styles from at least the 5th century onward. Whitework capitals were commonly used in the Gothic period of medieval manuscript art, particularly from the 12th to the 15th centuries.
