MARSHALL THORNTON, award-winning novelist

“Joan has edited most of my work for the last nine years. She's an amazing editor. She's skilled in content development and also the nitty-gritty of line editing. She meets her deadlines, which have sometimes been tight. If you have the opportunity to work with her you really should take it... but don't keep her too busy. I still need her.”

“Well, it’s been a long journey. More than a decade. Like writers everywhere I’ve been enormously helped by the people in my life. I hope I’ve done a good job of thanking them in the acknowledgments but suspect I have not. I would like to single out my longtime editor, Joan Martinelli who in addition to being quietly brilliant is also a wonderful friend. Those of us who have gotten to know her have been blessed.”

KIRSTEN ROURKE, instructional design & technology training consultant

“Joan and I worked together on a long-term project managing and coordinating artwork development and delivery for a non-profit educational organization known as the SCA or Society of Creative Anachronism.

“In our volunteer roles we worked together on:
  - Getting assignments on custom artwork from an ever changing list of people and assigning the artwork to artists. This included tracking and organizing back-and-forth emails from 1-15 people per request. There could be 5 or 20 assignments for each event. Over the years we did this there were hundreds of assignments.
  - Maintaining a large list of volunteer artists across the eastern third of the U.S. This was no small task as it included their contact info, artistic style preferences, willingness to do certain types of assignments, ability to deliver the work, ability to do specific kinds of work, previous quality of work, preferences of assignments... it went on and on.
  - Coordinating delivery of work.
  - Coordinating rescheduling of assignments when they were requested too late for an artist to accomplish (which happened too often) for a specific event.

“All this content was not in an easy-to-maintain database. We were given a huge stack of papers and 3x5 note cards and had to build a system from there. Because there was no budget, staff, or time to make a database, Joan designed and maintained Excel spreadsheets to track all this.

“Joan and I worked hand-in-hand on these tasks and if not for her patience, organizational skills, and superior ability to manage chaos we would not have been able to get anything done. Her ability to work independently at very high quality is phenomenal. She would be a huge asset to any organization.”

DEBORACH FLACK, former marketing director at EP&M International

“I've known Joan for more than 20 years and worked alongside her as a copy editor when we first met; later hired her as a graphic artist on special projects. It's rare in my experience to find an individual whose writing skills match their design talent. Joan is certainly one such person.

“I've found her to be remarkably creative, exquisitely detailed, and unfailingly reliable when it comes to demanding deadlines and client expectations.

“And, have I mentioned what an absolute pleasure she is to work with? I would be happy to provide a written or verbal recommendation for Joan's work any time.“
