DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING / CONTENT EDITING
Inherently complex, developmental editing (also called content editing) is both intuitive and foundational. This includes broad direction to clarify the overall vision, suggestions for rewrites and recommendations with the prose itself on paragraph, sentence and/or word levels. This editing looks at the document as a whole and focuses on any problems with structure, coherence and whatever services are required to develop accurate and logical content that is appropriate for the intended audience. It involves a check for consistent character voice, redundancies, shifts in agreement, consistency, organization, flow and clarity. It may include basic copyediting. Material might need to be added, removed or reorganized on advisement.

COPYEDITING / LINE EDITING
Once a manuscript has been edited for tone style and consistency, this edit scrutinizes the content  line by line, often several times. It starts with a rough pass looking for basic issues (spelling, grammar, punctuation, formatting), then a meticulously deeper look with each successive pass (sentence structure, word usage, overused words, extraneous words, style and consistency). This includes a check for errors of spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, word usage, consistency of style, clarity and rewrites to eliminate confusing or awkward sentence structure.

PROOFREADING is the last step in the editing process. It examines an already-edited document one final time, checking for any remaining errors and inconsistencies. (It does not take into consideration cohesiveness, tone, organization, etc.)  Proofreading is for work considered ready for publication, to ensure the piece is grammatically error-free.

FACT-CHECKING & RESEARCH verifies nonfiction information in mediums such as reports, magazine articles, newspapers, books or circulars. Depending on the agreement, fact-checkers might also verify figures, spellings and locations.

COPY WRITING involves writing and editing marketing or informational documents for businesses or professional organizations.

BETA READING reviews a manuscript in its rough state, critiquing and commenting on plot issues, characterization, believability — whatever might require improvement.  Depending on agreement, a beta reader might also check for typographical and grammatical  errors. Many authors use beta readers to improve the quality of their work before they submit it for professional editing and critique.
