MEDIEVAL ART - chivalry (knighthood peerage)
Inspired by the Jellinge Stones, massive carved runestones from the 10th century found at the town of Jelling in Denmark. The stones were raised by King Harald Bluetooth, in memory of his parents, celebrating the conquest of Denmark and Norway and his conversion of the Danes to Christianity.
The lion is inspired by the great beast carved on one side of a three-sided stone of the Mammen style 950-1060 AD, which is a variety of the Jellinge Style 880-1000 AD.
